About Humwe, and its founder
In 2001, just a week before 9/11, 21-year-old Tsitsi Magaya arrived in Eugene, Oregon, to become a U.S. college student. Her father was the world-renowned Zimbabwean mbira master Cosmas Magaya, who himself had visited Eugene several times previously
while on tour with ethnomusicologist Paul Berliner and also while attending the Zimbabwean Music Festival 2000, held at the University of Oregon. He initiated a program for learning to play mbira at Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center (https://kutsinhira.org/), a local Eugene nonprofit dedicated to the music and people of Zimbabwe.
Tsitsi had bravely left her home country to live with a Eugene family and study – first at Lane Community College and then the University of Oregon, where she graduated in 2004. She went on to earn a master’s degree in accounting and to work at several large US corporations. She eventually became a US citizen and currently lives with her family in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Tsitsi (which means “mercy” in her native language) had from the start the desire to help the people of her native country, and she was encouraged in this ambition by her father, as well as her friends and supporters at Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center in Eugene. So as soon as her own financial stability was established, Tsitsi began to plan and establish Humwe: the Cosmas Magaya Cultural Arts and Education Centre (https://humwe.org/ ), working in her father’s rural village in the Mhondoro area of Zimbabwe.
The Shona word “humwe” means “working together to achieve a shared goal.” Through Humwe, Tsitsi and local teachers and supporters started to offer mbira, marimba and dance classes to young people in the area, under the guidance of Cosmas Magaya.
Tsitsi called together a board of directors to help her work on becoming a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit so that the goals of Humwe (Cultural Preservation, Cultural Exchange, and Community Support) could be realized in a larger way. US nonprofit status was attained by Humwe in July 2020. Just days later, we suffered the loss of our elder, inspiration, and friend, Cosmas Magaya, to the Covid-19 pandemic. Though we experienced this tragedy as a deep loss in many ways, it did not deter Tsitsi and the Humwe Board from carrying out Tsitsi’s vision; rather, we considered it now to be more urgent, because mbira had lost its champion and Zimbabwe its cultural ambassador.
Humwe has continued to offer lessons to local young people in playing marimba, mbira, and other traditional instruments, but has also expanded its programs to include young
rural students from many other areas of Zimbabwe. This is done by means of holding weeklong camps during school breaks, where students travel to Magaya village to learn and share the music. The organization has also purchased instruments to donate to local schools and paid school fees for its students. Future plans include an expansion of the music camp program, exchange visits of Humwe students with students in other areas of Zimbabwe, and the building of a small traditional village and other accommodation so that visitors from both Zimbabwe and other countries can come and learn about Shona music and culture.

Garcia Birthday Band, based in Portland Oregon, isn’t your mother’s Grateful Dead cover band. Playing for over 20 years, GBB has evolved into something far deeper than the sum of its parts. The beating heart of the Pacific Northwest’s GD community, the band’s ever-expanding fanbase is an experience unto themselves. Using the Dead’s repertoire as a springboard for limitless potential and improvisation, Garcia Birthday Band are a cornerstone of the modern Grateful Dead universe, and their fans have come to expect the unexpected as the norm.
Placing no boundaries on eras of the Dead’s career or catalog, and drawing on decades of individual and shared experience, GBB play the music through an auditory kaleidoscope. Composed of some of the most ace players of the Oregon live music community, the band makes every show an act of exploration, both musically and spiritually. United hearts and minds blur the line between the stage and crowd – a carnival of human potential. If you’re new to Garcia Birthday Band, their doors are always open, and you’ll recognize it as something familiar when you first walk in: home.

Emerging out of the swamps of Southern California, The Alligators were formed to celebrate the music of Grateful Dead, “Pigpen” and Beyond!
Simply put, The Alligators are here to party hard and Rock you!
The bands repertoire consists of high-octane, whiskey-soaked versions of the often-neglected Pigpen songs that are the bedrock foundation of the Grateful Dead. They don’t stop there, however, and one is never sure what may materialize in their barn-burning performances.
The Alligators energetic stage show is anchored by lead singer, Pete Carona, who’s unique style is Pigpen-esque, but in No way presented as an impersonation. The dual guitar assault consists of “Stevie Ravioli” on Rhythm guitar and Steven Kim—AKA “The Kimchee Warrior” on Lead Guitar. Chompin’ the keyboards and piano is “Berkey Gator” and on bass guitar is “J.J. Gator” Rounding out the rhythm section on drums is Richard La Chomp.
The bands first show in 2017 was just supposed to be a One-Off gig to fill a 6am time slot of another band who had cancelled a last-minute festival spot. Our Manager and Founder of Southern Californias skull n Roses festival, Chris Mitrovich, had a last-minute epiphany to fill the void with a fresh band to kickstart the day. He rallied each band member who all came from completely different musical backgrounds, and genres, but all shared a common Love for big time jams and Grateful Dead Music.
That day… The Alligators were born. We got such a wonderful response as we came off the stage that first show, all the people in attendance were saying to us “Where do we see you next?” So, we rolled with it, and every show we play, the crowds get bigger and bigger, and the Jams keep getting sweeter and sweeter! The gas pedal has been pinned to the floor ever since. The Alligators play year-round spreading the gospel of fun-loving, ass shakin’, Boogie Woogie, Swamp-rockin’ Jam Music.
Come and join the party and… Come Chomp with us!
A perfect, lyric driven blend of Roots, Country and modern Americana
Boise, ID based band Tylor & the Train Robbers, comprised of Tylor Ketchum, his brothers Jason and Tommy Bushman and his father-in-law Johnny “Shoes” Pisano deliver a perfect, lyric-driven blend of Roots Country and modern Americana music. Paired with their unrelenting dedication to the road, they have earned the reputation of hardworking professionals whose live shows highlight the connectedness that they’ve acquired not only from years of playing together, but also from the family bond that they all share.
Their latest album, Non-Typical Find, is the band’s third independently released studio album and marks their first project with producer Cody Braun of Reckless Kelly. The eleven song compilation showcases Ketchum’s songwriting genius with subject material ranging from current events to harrowing tales of dead bodies discovered. The band delivers with the tight, dynamic sound they are known for and, on this album, raises the bar by including a few talented friends whose musical contributions add nuance and texture to the band’s already solid sound. The outcome is an album that is an honest and intriguing blend of Ketchum’s lyrical talent and the musical chemistry of the band.
