Mike Dillon has spent the last three decades performing well over 200 shows a year. So when the pandemic hit in early 2020, forcing Dillon off the road, he instinctively directed his perpetually restless creative energy to writing and recording. The result is three new albums from Dillon: Shoot The Moon, Suitcase Man and 1918.
Shoot The Moon is a ten track collection that Dillon describes as Punkadelic-Funk-Psych focused heavily on the current political climate in the United States.
Suitcase Man is a nine-song cycle through which Dillon examine his life and choices made over the past 55 years. Its a distinct entry in his extensive discography, notable for its strikingly honest lyricism and minimalist arrangements that incorporate sparse vibraphone and percussion with a handful of background vocals.
Dillon completes the trilogy with 1918. The focal point here are Dillons instrumentals: the dank and dark Moog/tabla/vibraphone psych vibe of Pinocchio, the electro analog trance of Pelagic and the jungle groove, space rock of the title track. Thematically speaking, the material addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and recent social unrest. The parallels between 1918 and 2020 are immense. We just have fancier toys, but the tunnel vision and mammalian tendencies are the same if not greater, explains Dillon.
For this Punkadelic Winter Tour, Dillon is joined by Nikki Glaspie and Brian Haas.
Nikki Glaspie: Sorceress. Alchemist. Beat Conductor. Funk Philosopher. Seneshal of Style. Purveyor of Pocket. Child of God. Agent of Love.
Glaspie is many things to many people, not least of which being among the premier drummers in music today. She has touched countless lives, laying down the groove for us to live our lives. Glaspie has played behind and alongside musical luminaries amid an array of genres, cities and scenes. As a founding member of The Nth Power, she continues blazing a path of light behind the kit, leaving a trail of fire behind her, and rolling waves of love in her wake. Nikki is already a living legend, and her name rings out among an impressive array of collaborators, calling to all corners of the globe.
Brian Haas: “Piano giant Brian Haas is taking the instrument deep into an explosive, exploratory future where genres blur and stylistic lines are not so much redrawn but re-imagined. Haas matchless originality and soul are as much a product of his unique upbringing as they are his process of self-discovery, and his vibrant energy and musical vitality are testament to his determination to remain true to his ideals.” – Keyboard Magazine
